History

Art en Campagne was created in 2009. The communes of Collex-Bossy (Switzerland), Ornex (France) and Versonnex (France) set up this cross-border art exhibition. As a result of its success, a second exhibition was held in 2010. When in the following year (2011), the town of Ferney-Voltaire (France) participated in its third edition, some works were exhibited in the park and the garden of the Château de Voltaire. The 4th (2012) and 5th editions (2013) were organized by Collex-Bossy and Ornex.

In 2016, after a three-year break, the Collex-Bossy and Ornex executives, supported by their respective municipal councils, decided to continue financing and organizing this cross-border cultural event. From then on, it becomes biennial.

For each edition, a theme is set by the organizing committee; « Messages and the Wind » (2009), « No Man’s Land … » Man’s Land « (2010), » Lures and Light « (2011), » Dreams of the Solitary Walker « to celebrate the tercentenary of the birth of Jean-Jacques Rousseau (2012), « Beyond the Boundaries » (2013) and « Bridges of Hope » (2016). In 2018, artists will exhibit their work (s) around the theme « The Fifth Season ».

A particular challenge for the artists is the choice of the materials they use. The artworks are exposed to all weather conditions and the course is not guarded. They are installed along a path of about 6 km on the territory of the two organizing municipalities, in a beautiful landscape between the Jura, Lake Geneva and the Mont Blanc.
